To celebrate the 250th anniversary of America’s independence, a massive 900-pound stainless steel time capsule was officially sealed and buried at Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia, which includes an iPhone 17 Pro Max in Cosmic Orange.

The decision to include the phone came through the “America Innovates” initiative by America250, the congressional organization handling the country’s semiquincentennial events. According to official selection notes, the iPhone 17 Pro Max was chosen because few consumer products have altered how humans communicate, work, and create as profoundly as Apple’s smartphone.
To the committee, the iPhone represents the absolute cutting edge of handheld computing, mobile photography, and wireless connectivity available today.
What makes this choice particularly fascinating is what is hidden inside the hardware. Before engineers sealed the container, specific digital artifacts were saved directly into the iPhone’s default Notes app. These documents, lists, and snapshots are intended to provide a unique window into everyday life. If future citizens manage to access the file system two and a half centuries from now, they will get a raw look at what preoccupied average people during the summer of 2026.
However, the inclusion of a modern smartphone brings up a massive technical debate: will the iPhone actually work in 2276?
The short answer is that it is highly doubtful. The iPhone 17 Pro Max relies on standard lithium-ion battery technology. These batteries degrade significantly over years, let alone centuries, meaning the internal power cell will almost certainly be dead and potentially chemicalized long before the capsule is scheduled to be opened.
