A new camera based gesture check will ask users to perform simple hand movements. Critics warn this may deepen biometric surveillance concerns.

Google is rolling out a new hand-gesture verification system in reCAPTCHA for some users, which may ask for camera access and require a few simple movements to verify that you are human. The new mechanism is designed to tackle increasingly sophisticated bots that can bypass standard CAPTCHA, which typically involves recognizing objects in images or solving opaque puzzles.

According to Google, the system analyzes a short video of the user’s hand and outputs 21 coordinates for tracking the gestures, using hand joint landmarks to recognize the movements.

In a blog post on the Google Cloud Defense page, the company states that the video is not linked to the user’s identity, audio is never recorded, and frames are deleted after the verification is complete.

The company notes that this option strengthens “live” detection, helping sites combat automated account creation, credential-stuffing attacks, and other forms of online fraud.

Checks like “I’m not a robot” should not require a camera

The move drew criticism from privacy advocates who argue that the camera access requirement for routine checks signals a further expansion of online biometric monitoring.

As concerns about biometric verification grow, in the context of increasing use of around-the-clock age-verification tools on online platforms, it underscores the debate about privacy versus security boundaries.

The system was significantly worse than traditional CAPTCHA because it relied on a camera; users said they would prefer image-based tasks and did not want the new method, which they described as frightening, of verification.

Critics also question the effectiveness of such technology. One user of a popular messaging app on X emphasized that the system could be bypassed using a virtual camera and AI-generated animations,…
