VICTORIA, Texas — Utility and emergency management officials are working together to prepare for the upcoming hurricane season, focusing on coordination, safety and new technology to keep power flowing during severe weather.
AEP Texas officials say their primary goal during hurricane season is to ensure residents have reliable electricity, even in the wake of damaging storms.
To prepare, AEP is partnering with local Offices of Emergency Management to run hurricane scenarios and test equipment that will be used during an actual emergency.
“We say two things at AEP Texas: safety first and customer first,” AEP Corpus Christi District public information office Omar Lopez said. “When those contractors come in and learn about our business, we expect them to work safely, but also as quickly as possible, because they know people are depending on us.”
Among the tools being tested are drones designed to improve response times and damage assessment. During a recent demonstration, officials showcased both a smaller drone and a larger model.
The smaller drone is used to inspect hard-to-reach areas and may even be deployed to drop supplies if needed. The larger drone is capable of surveying widespread damage across larger مناطق.
