June Android Drop: Quick Share AirDrop expansion, Play Books AI

Google today announced the latest spring features with the June Android Drop. At the same time, Google teased that “even more exciting updates [are] coming soon in Android 17.”

Google is continuing to expand Quick Share’s AirDrop compatibility. The latest supported devices are as follows:

Google Play Books is adding an AI-powered “Book insights” feature. When you zoom out of a page, there’s a new light bulb badged by the Gemini spark in the top-right corner. Tapping opens the Book insights chat page where you can “Ask Play Books” with a “Catch me up” recap prompt. You can also “highlight a passage to ask questions and dive deeper into themes, context or characters.”

This capability is rolling out starting with “select English titles, including thousands that are available at no charge.”

The Personal Safety app will soon be available to kids under 13. For these users, it can be used to display “medical information and setting emergency contacts on their device’s lock screen.” Then there’s Car Crash Detection to automatically call emergency services and preset contacts. They will also have access to location features like Safety Check and real-time sharing with emergency contacts. This expanded availability is “coming soon.”
