WhatsApp has introduced an Incognito Chat feature with Meta AI, enabling users to hold private conversations with the artificial intelligence assistant amid growing concerns around data privacy, according to a WhatsApp blog post.
The development comes as more users turn to AI tools for discussions ranging from financial and legal queries to personal and emotional concerns, prompting increased demand for stronger privacy safeguards across platforms.
The Meta-owned messaging platform stated that the Incognito Chat feature is designed to allow users to engage with the AI without leaving a trace of their interactions, particularly in cases involving sensitive topics such as health, finances or personal guidance.
The feature is built on Meta’s Private Processing technology, which ensures that conversations remain inaccessible to both other users and the company itself. Unlike some existing incognito-style modes, the platform stated that interactions are handled within a secure environment that Meta cannot access, with messages neither stored nor retained after the session ends.
The system also conceals identifying information such as users’ IP addresses, maintains encryption during processing, and automatically deletes temporary chats once the interaction is closed.
Incognito Chat with Meta AI is being rolled out gradually over the coming months across both WhatsApp and the Meta AI application, with the feature remaining optional for users.
In addition, Meta is planning to expand its private AI capabilities on WhatsApp with the introduction of a Side Chat feature in the coming months. The update will provide contextual AI assistance within ongoing conversations using Private Processing, without exposing chat content or disrupting the primary interaction.
