Apple removes $599 Mac mini from its store

Apple has removed the cheapest M4 Mac mini configuration from its U.S. store. The system previously started at $599 with an M4 chip, 16GB of unified memory and 256GB of storage. The lowest configuration now listed in Apple’s purchase configurator uses the same M4 chip with a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU. It also keeps 16GB of unified memory, but storage now starts at 512GB. This raises the entry price to $799.

This is not a price increase for the 512GB model itself. That configuration was already priced at $799 when the M4 Mac mini launched. The change is that the 256GB model is no longer available to order from Apple. Is it cancelled? I wouldn’t call it this way, but this model is not even listed on the site anymore.

The M4 Pro versions are not affected by this change. Those models already started with 512GB of storage, with the cheapest M4 Pro configuration previously listed at $1399.

Mac Mini systems are a very popular choice among developers who would use them for local AI. Perhaps for this reason, Apple’s (still) CEO Tim Cook recently said Mac mini and Mac Studio supply remained constrained, with demand linked to AI and agentic tools.
