Apple is reportedly planning a major redesign for the 20th anniversary iPhone in 2027. If the latest supply chain leaks are anything to go by, it could mark one of the most dramatic shifts in iPhone display design yet. To pull this off, Apple will likely tap Samsung Display.
Apple is working with Samsung Display for 20th anniversary iPhone redesign
According to prolific leaker Digital Chat Station, Samsung will develop a custom OLED quad-curved design for the 20th anniversary iPhone. It will have subtle micro-curves on all four edges. Unlike the waterfall displays seen on some Android phones, this approach focuses on usability. It keeps distortion low while delivering a near bezel-less design.
Samsung’s role goes beyond shaping the glass. The company is also expected to supply a “pol-less” OLED panel, which removes the usual polarizer layer. Instead, it will use COE (Color Filter on Encapsulation), where the color filter is built into the encapsulation layer. That helps make the display thinner, brighter, and more power efficient.
While Apple handles the overall experience, Samsung Display is doing the heavy lifting on the hardware side. Dropping the polarizer brings some trade-offs, especially with reflections, but Apple is said to be working on better anti-reflective coatings to deal with that.
There’s also talk of improved light diffusion, possibly using a crater-shaped layer to keep brightness even across the panel. At the same time, Apple is still testing under-display Face ID and camera tech, but those might not be ready in time for 2027.
Of course, it’s still early, and things could change by the time this iPhone arrives. Apart from that, Apple is expected to launch its first foldable this year, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The standard models could arrive later, possibly in spring 2027.
