Google released a native Gemini application for macOS on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, marking the artificial intelligence chatbot’s transition from a web-based tool to a dedicated desktop experience. The application is now available globally at no cost for users running macOS version 15 and higher.
The desktop software introduces a dedicated keyboard shortcut, Option + Space, allowing users to summon the AI assistant instantly without switching browser tabs or windows. According to a report from blog.google, this integration is designed to help users maintain focus while performing complex tasks like drafting reports or building spreadsheets.
A core feature of the new app is the ability to share active windows or local files directly with Gemini for immediate analysis. Users can request summaries of complex charts or data sets by providing the AI with direct visual context of what is currently displayed on their screen.
Beyond text-based assistance, the macOS app incorporates Google’s latest generative tools. Users can access Nano Banana for image generation and the Veo model for creating high-fidelity video content directly through the desktop interface.
