Google launched a native Gemini desktop application for macOS on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, providing users with a dedicated interface to access artificial intelligence features directly from their computers. The application is currently available globally at no cost for devices running macOS versions 15 and above.

According to reports from blog.google and CNET, the software integrates into the desktop environment via a specific keyboard shortcut, allowing users to summon the assistant without navigating away from their active windows. This native experience marks a shift for Google’s Large Language Models, which were previously limited to web-based applications on desktop platforms.

The application introduces a feature that allows users to share their active windows or local files with the AI to receive immediate analysis. Users can prompt the assistant to summarize complex charts or extract data from documents visible on the screen, as reported by Google.

“What are the three biggest takeaways here?” an example prompt suggested by Google for users reviewing complex charts to get an instant summary.

Beyond text-based assistance, the app provides access to Google’s creative suite. Users can utilize the Nano Banana model for image generation and the Veo model for video creation within the desktop workflow. CNET noted that music generation capabilities are also integrated into the interface.

Google characterized this release as the initial phase of a broader strategy for its desktop ecosystem. The company stated it is establishing a framework for a more integrated assistant capable of proactive tasks in the future.
