You may have noticed that you can unlock your Android phone with your face, but things like mobile payments require a PIN or fingerprint. Unlike the iPhone, most Android phones don’t have secure enough face recognition—here are the ones that do.
The reality is that not all “Face Unlock” methods are created equally. There’s a huge difference in being able to simply identify a face and analyze it on the same level as a fingerprint. Many Android phones can do the former, but it takes special technology to do the latter. That’s what enabled iPhones to do so much with Face ID, and some Android phones can do the same thing.

Android essentially has three levels of biometric security, and each one can be used for different purposes. Think of it like clearance levels in a top-secret facility—the higher the clearance you have, the more doors you can open.
- First up is “BIOMETRIC_CONVENIENCE” (Class 1), and this is where face unlock falls on most Android devices. Class 1 biometrics can be used to get past the lock screen, and that’s it.
