A month after Halifax Water disclosed that it was investigating a privacy breach involving its Customer Connect online portal, it says there’s still no answers about how it happened.

The utility announced the breach on March 6 and said it believed that no customer financial information had been accessed, but it didn’t specify what information was accessed.

It’s not yet clear when the breach occurred, how long it lasted or when Halifax Water discovered it.

“We are currently working with HRM Access and Privacy and are actively investigating the nature of the privacy breach,” Halifax Water said in an email to CBC on March 24. It confirmed Wednesday that there were no further updates.

“The investigation is ongoing, and we will provide updates as more information becomes available. Until that time, the Customer Connect Portal will remain offline.”

The portal provides customers access to account information including billing forecasts and consumption alerts. It’s also where customers can update their personal information, including their phone number and email address.

In an update shared on X and Facebook on March 31, Halifax Water wrote that while the portal is offline, customers can pay their bills using pre-authorized payment, credit card, online banking, through their financial institution or in person.
