CHELMSFORD — After 10 years at the helm, ZOLL CEO Jon Rennert will step down from his current role to take on the job of executive chair of ZOLL’s Board of Directors, and on April 1 the medical device company will welcome Eric Knudsen as its new CEO.

Knudsen has spent the last 30 years in the medical technology industry, the last 13 of which have been with ZOLL. He first served as the leader of the company’s corporate development team, and for the past four years he has been the president of ZOLL’s Itamar division, which focuses on technology to help diagnose sleep disorders.

“I am honored to become ZOLL’s next CEO,” Knudsen said in a statement. “ZOLL has a long legacy of innovation and clinical excellence, and today our medical devices, software, and related services are used worldwide to diagnose and treat patients suffering from serious cardiopulmonary and respiratory conditions. We will continue to lead with our commitment to patients and customers and our passion for improving outcomes and helping save lives.”

Rennert said in a statement the company “is continually looking for ways to expand our business and reach more patients in need.”

“Eric has played a unique role in developing our growth strategies and driving our expansion, and I am confident he will lead ZOLL to even greater growth and success,” said Rennert.

Rennert was named CEO in 2016 after having served as president of ZOLL’s largest business unit.

In a phone call with The Sun Thursday, Knudsen described how the company has expanded from its initial focus on defibrillation, to now include areas such as respiratory care and sleep medicine, especially after ZOLL acquired Itamar a few years ago. The different areas of medical technology can intersect in some ways Knudsen said, like the linkage between a disease like sleep apnea and a number of other diseases the company deals with.

Knudsen’s ascension to CEO comes at what he said is “an exciting time for ZOLL,”…
