Google’s web browser, Chrome, long offered a Reading mode, but the experience wasn’t very seamless. In the past, Chrome’s “Reading mode” was often inconsistent, as it did not appear on every article that you thought needed a simplified view. When it was available, though, there was a large Omnibox button that eventually shrank into a circle. Google Chrome for Android is now addressing this with always-available Reading mode.
Chrome for Android is now receiving an always-available Reading mode redesign
The new update brings a new “Show Reading mode” button to the three-dot menu. This button consistently appears in the overflow regardless of the page you’re visiting. This new placement seems to remove the old address bar shortcut. However, there is a dedicated button to quickly exit the Reading mode.
Instead of taking over the entire screen like before, the updated view takes you to a new one that retains the Omnibox. There’s a Reading mode sheet, which leverages Material 3 Expressive containers and shape morphing, at the bottom. This allows you to customize the page with a different font, background color, and text size.

The fonts here include Sans Serif, Serif, Mono, and Lexend. The background color can be Light, Sepia, or Dark. Text size can be up to 250%. Google notes that when you tap “Show Reading mode” and the web page isn’t available in Reading mode, users will see a pop-up message that says, “Reading mode is unavailable.”
Chrome’s updated Reading mode preserves your settings across different pages, which will ensure a consistent reading experience. That said, the significant improvement here is the manual activation option. Chrome for Android’s Reading mode redesign is now widely rolling out. 9to5Google reports seeing this redesign with Chrome app version 145, but there’s apparently a server-side component.
