Operating systems are complex and large pieces of software, and the same goes for Linux systems. Fortunately, there are still plenty of small Linux distros available. They’re also quite useful things to keep on spare USB drives or virtual machines. Here’s why.
Tiny Linuxes are fun to play with
The main reason that I like small Linux distros is that they’re just so fun to try out. When physical machines were the only way to run Linux on PCs, there was a kind of magic in booting up a small operating system. Even in the ’90s and early 2000s, Windows had a reputation as a lumbering behemoth. With Linux distros seeming to put on more weight, they resembled the system that had come preinstalled on their machines, which users were trying to get away from.
A small Linux system seemed like a breath of fresh air back then. Distros like Damn Small Linux, Puppy Linux, and Tiny Core Linux could fit comfortably on a CD-R. Tom’s Root Boot famously ran on a floppy disk. With floppy disks and CD-Rs falling out of use, many distros can squeeze comfortably on a USB stick. You can run several of them on a single USB drive with Ventoy.
