Bangkok Post – Google confirms Android Quick Share will soon work with AirDrop

Google has officially confirmed that its Quick Share feature will soon allow Android users to transfer files directly to Apple’s AirDrop, expanding a capability previously thought to be exclusive to the Pixel 10 series.
The announcement by Eric Kay, Android’s vice president of engineering, clarifies that the cross-platform functionality first teased in November will roll out to a wide range of Android devices beyond the current Pixel 10 series.
Speaking to media at Google’s Taipei office, Mr Kay said the tech giant is committed to ensuring seamless interoperability between Android handsets and Apple – iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks.
Google’s strategy involves transitioning the Quick Share Extension from a system-level background service into a standalone application on the Play Store. This shift is intended to decouple the feature from specific hardware, ensuring it is not restricted solely to Google’s own Pixel brand.
While a definitive list of compatible devices has not yet been released, several manufacturers have already signalled their intent to adopt the technology.
Nothing Phone has been the first third-party brand to confirm it will integrate the updated Quick Share feature. Meanwhile, chipmaker Qualcomm has indicated it is working on software optimisations to ensure Snapdragon-powered devices can match the file-sharing performance seen on the Pixel 10.
The initiative follows a joint pledge made by Google and the Android team in December to prioritise “frictionless” sharing experiences for users who frequently move between different mobile platforms.
Currently, sharing high-resolution photos or large documents between Android and iOS often requires third-party cloud services or messaging apps, which can compress file quality. The integration of Quick Share and AirDrop aims to eliminate these hurdles using a combination of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Direct protocols.
