Apple’s long-rumoured foldable iPhone may not be a one-off.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is also exploring a clamshell-style “iPhone Flip” that could arrive after its first foldable handset. The first device is widely expected to be a book-style iPhone Fold.
In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Gurman says Apple is considering a square, flip-style foldable internally. It’s far from a done deal. However, the thinking appears to be that if Apple’s first foldable proves successful, there could be room for a second, more compact form factor. This would be much like how the iPhone line-up eventually expanded beyond a single size.
That first step is expected to be the iPhone Fold. While Apple has stayed silent publicly, rumours suggest the company is edging closer to launching its first foldable device. This comes despite Samsung already being on its seventh-generation Galaxy Z Fold and experimenting with even more ambitious designs. If Apple does enter the category, it’s expected to take its time and prioritise durability, display quality, and software polish.
The idea of a flip-style iPhone isn’t entirely new either. Back in 2024, Trusted Reviews reported that Apple was testing multiple foldable prototypes, including a clamshell design, before apparently settling on a book-style model as its first release. It suggests that the flip concept hasn’t been shelved entirely. Instead, it has just been pushed further down the roadmap.

Still, expectations should be kept in check. We should take note that the clamshell device is “far from guaranteed” to ever reach the market. Given how long Apple has been linked to foldables without shipping one, an iPhone Flip could be years away. It might not happen at all.
