Valve launched the latest update to Proton Experimental to bring more fixes for running Windows games on SteamOS / Linux including Steam Deck and Steam Machine. In case you missed it – Valve also recently launched the latest stable version with Proton 11.

Proton Experimental is like their testing ground for future stable numbered version Proton updates. You can install any version of Proton by just searching for “Proton” in your Steam Library. Check out the GamingOnLinux Guide to all the different Proton versions if you’re confused.

Notes from the official changelog below for the Proton Experimental update on July 15th.

Noted to be now playable: Heroes of the Three Kingdoms 7

Other fixes and improvements:

  • Fixed sprites not rendering in Zombie Estate 2.
  • Fixed Diablo IV not being playable after a recent game update.
  • Fixed Marvel Rivals crashing after a recent game update.
  • Fixed RPGMaker Engine games freezing after being minimized inside of gamescope.
  • Fixed audio cutting out in Touhou Danmaku Kagura Phantasia Lost.
  • Fixed Proton 11 regressions:
    • The Coma 3: Bloodlines is playable again.
    • Elite Dangerous HUD Mod should no longer crash the game.

Some of the fixes we reported in previous articles on GamingOnLinux, as Valve put out multiple updates to Proton Hotfix for the likes of Diablo IV and Marvel Rivals which are now in Proton Experimental. So you can continue playing them with Proton Experimental now to get the rest of the latest goodies.

Is there a particular game you’re hoping to see Valve fix up with Proton? There’s sadly still quite a lot that are blocked due to anti-cheat that Valve cannot solve – that’s down to the publishers. Perhaps the Steam Deck, Steam Machine, Steam Frame and expanded SteamOS rollout will continue to boost the Linux numbers so eventually publishers will stop blocking us.
