Epic and Google Jointly Withdraw Play Store Settlement; Rival Android App Stores to Open July 22

Amidst the backdrop of an $800 million partnership between the two tech giants, both companies have settled to abide by the October 2024 US court injunction. Starting from July 22, 2026, the Google Play Store will begin to carry third-party app stores within the US. This decision proves to be a monumental one in the world of application software, allowing for more visibility to be given to lesser-known alternatives to figureheads such as the aforementioned Play Store and leveling the playing field when it comes to competition and costs.
Background
Epic Games v. Google — otherwise known as the In re Google Play Store Antitrust Litigation — was an ongoing case between the two companies regarding the accusations of the former against the latter for the later confirmed monopolistic means through which it maintained dominance in the app store environment. Tim Sweeney, the CEO of Epic Games, sought “injunctive relief to allow fair competition” and framed the argument from a perspective of freedom, focusing on the right of the consumer to purchase and the right of the creator to distribute. This was all within the claim of Google making it difficult or impossible for third-party distributors to do so with their specific practices. In response, Google claimed Epic had violated Google Play’s payment system and policy by allowing V-bucks to be bought directly from the latter, which evaded the contractually agreed service fee of the platform. The entirety of the case, brought forth within Epic’s “Project Liberty” campaign in 2020 (which included Epic’s similar initiative against Apple), had its trial held in 2023, where the jury came to a unanimous decision in favor of Epic’s claims. In 2025, the settlement had come to an agreement between the two to allow alternative app stores to be listed as approved on Android worldwide and reduce its cut of store purchases on its app store.
