WhatsApp appears to be working on a significant change to how iPhone users back up their chats. Instead of relying solely on Apple’s iCloud, the messaging platform is testing its own cloud backup service, allowing conversations to be stored on WhatsApp’s servers. The feature is still in development and has yet to reach beta testers.
Code discovered in the latest iOS beta suggests users could receive 2GB of free storage for encrypted backups. The app also references paid storage tiers for people who need additional capacity, though WhatsApp has not confirmed pricing or indicated when the feature might launch.
Privacy appears to remain central to the plan. Backups stored on WhatsApp’s infrastructure are expected to retain end-to-end encryption, meaning only the account owner would be able to access their chat history. Even WhatsApp would not be able to read the contents.
For iPhone users, the biggest benefit may be flexibility. Backups would no longer depend entirely on available iCloud storage, a longstanding limitation for people with large chat histories or limited free space.
Housing backups within WhatsApp’s own ecosystem could also make moving conversations between iPhone and Android devices far more straightforward.
Messaging platforms are steadily taking ownership of the services that surround conversations, whether that’s usernames, encrypted backups, multi-device syncing, or identity management.
A proprietary backup service would give WhatsApp greater control over the user experience while reducing its dependence on Apple’s cloud infrastructure.
It’s another sign that messaging apps are evolving into self-contained platforms rather than services built on top of someone else’s ecosystem.
