A Montreal-area school board says it will offer credit monitoring and identity protection for parents whose sensitive information was circulated by mistake last week.

The school board says the service will be provided for free for three years to all those affected by the privacy breach.

“(The service) will notify you of any unusual activity related to your credit,” the school board wrote to parents in an email, Monday evening.

Last Thursday, Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board sent an email to parents of children attending a Rosemere High School a document containing names, birth dates, social insurance numbers, phone numbers, email addresses, country of birth, emergency telephone numbers and contacts.

Shortly after the school board sent a text message asking parents not to open the email and delete it.

The incident raised concerns about the school board’s cybersecurity practices.

James Di Sano, chairperson of the school board, said the breach would be reported the Commission d’accès à l’information du Québec.

In a statement Monday, Di Sano added that, “The Council of Commissioners takes the July 2 privacy incident at Rosemere High School very seriously and has been receiving regular updates on the measures being implemented to support affected individuals.”

Parents who received the sensitive information were also asked to sign a from confirming that they have deleted the email.

“These confirmations remain an important part of our mitigation efforts and help us verify that the information has been deleted and not shared further,” Di Sano said.

The school board also recommended affected parents to place a free credit lock on their credit file with Equifax Canada and TransUnion Canada.
