If Android Auto is crashing for you, you’re not alone, as the latest updates seem to be causing issues for a number of users.
Reports on Reddit and Google’s forums show that there’s a significant uptick in crashing issues on Android Auto following the latest updates. The problem seems to be primarily around the Android Auto 17.2 release, with v17.1 also affected to a lesser extent.
For those affected, the problem causes Android Auto to crash shortly after it starts, putting the car’s display back to the native infotainment system before Android Auto comes back. Disconnects seem to happen after virtually any action is made, including interacting with the map or media, every few minutes.
Importantly, though, this seems to be mostly affecting those enrolled in the Android Auto beta program. The stable track, where Android Auto v17.0 is predominantly available, does not seem to be having issues. Android Auto 17.1 is also available in the stable track, and also appears to be affected to some extent.
While not a beta-only issue, those affected can downgrade to a stable version – either through leaving the Play Store beta program, using Android’s “uninstall updates” feature, or sideloading the APK of a past version – to avoid the crashing issues until Google has sorted out the problem.
