A woman who received dozens of sexually explicit messages over Instagram, including AI-generated nude photos of her and threats of rape, says she was harassed by one of her students for more than two months while working in Winnipeg’s River East Transcona School Division.
“The fact that I treated them with respect and kindness … and this is what they were doing to me?” she said. “I felt so, so disgusted. I felt violated.”
The woman said the harassment started shortly after she joined the school division to do a work placement or practicum, the last requirement she needed to graduate from the University of Winnipeg’s faculty of education.
“I was so excited to finish my degree there, and it all kind of just went down the drain because no matter what I was doing, it was in the back of my mind,” she said.
The Winnipeg woman — whom CBC News is not naming because she is a victim of harassment — received messages from an unknown Instagram account on April 3. The messages included nude images of women with her face, which she believes were fabricated from her profile pictures using artificial intelligence.
The woman said she blocked the account. Soon after, another account reached out, sharing the same nude images.
She filed a police report, but the harassment continued. Every time she would block an account, a new one would reach out, the woman said.
The accounts also started sharing images of male genitalia, videos of male masturbation and threats of rape.

“I felt really uncomfortable in my own skin. I started blaming myself,” the woman said.
She deactivated social media for about two weeks, but the messages resumed shortly after she logged into Instagram again. The messages continued every few days, often coming in the evenings and weekends, from different accounts.
