Ford Rehires Veteran Engineers After Artificial Intelligence Defects

Major corporations are reversing their automation strategies and rehiring human workers after artificial intelligence systems failed to adequately manage quality control and operations. Ford Motor Co. quietly reemployed over 350 veteran engineers over the last three years to resolve automated quality-control issues that cost the company billions in warranties and recalls, as reported by Bloomberg and CNET. The automaker recently secured the top position among mainstream brands in the 2026 JD Power Initial Quality Study after falling to 15th place in 2023.
According to a Ford press release, the company acknowledged that “reaching best-in-class quality required a significant talent refresh” by recruiting experienced specialists. The adjustments come after senior executives previously projected massive workforce replacements due to technological integration.
“AI will leave a lot of white collar people behind,” said Jim Farley, Chief Executive Officer of Ford, in a June interview with author Walter Isaacson.
Farley later expanded on this stance at a conference, stating that artificial intelligence is “going to replace literally half of all white-collar workers in the US.” However, automated systems applied to manufacturing and assembly processes failed to meet operational expectations, forcing the company to reintroduce human oversight.
“Artificial intelligence is a fantastic tool, but it’s only as good as the information you use to train it,” said Charles Poon, Vice President of Vehicle Hardware Engineering at Ford. Poon admitted that the company overlooked its existing human capital during its initial push toward automated systems.
