Apple’s next iPhone software, iOS 27, is promised for this month, July 2026. Apple hasn’t specified exactly when, but there are clues. Here’s what to expect and when, plus whether it’s worth downloading as soon as possible or waiting for the general release.

The Path To The September General Release

Let’s work backwards: the general release will come in September, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro — read this for the expected timeline for hardware, software and reviews.

So, you could wait for that, and in terms of the iPhone you use every day, you should. Apple stresses that until then, this is beta software and problems can arise. It’s likely that there will be glitches, such as apps that haven’t been updated to work smoothly with the new beta software, or battery life that’s not always reliable, for instance.

But if you have a second iPhone, and it’s an iPhone 11 or more recent, including iPhone SE second- and third-generation, then you can download and install iOS 27. Basically, if your iPhone can run iOS 26, it can handle iOS 27 — though Apple Intelligence is only available on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and later.

Apple iOS 27 has already hit its second developer beta. Read this for how to download the developer beta (with the same caveats about not using your main driver). However, that’s not what happened last year.
