TL;DR

  • A new app called Pixel Audio Services looks like it can deliver new system sounds without requiring a system update.
  • The app is visible on the Play Store now, but the listing we’ve seen is only compatible with Pixel 10 phones.

Google’s got a new way to add new system sounds to Pixel phones without a system update. Spotted by 9to5Google, a new app called Pixel Audio Services appears to add new system sounds through the Play Store rather than a full system update.

Some audio can already be swapped out easily — you can set whatever audio you want as a ringtone, for example. But other sounds, like the noises your phone makes when you lock and unlock it or plug it in to charge, are part of your phone’s system files. Poking around the Pixel Audio Services app, we’ve found it can install new sounds via APEX files, and given the app is updated through the Play Store, Google could use it to deliver new sounds whenever it wants rather than just in Android updates.

It’s not immediately obvious why Google wanted an alternative way to update system sounds on Pixel phones, but it could have something to do with the custom Pixel themes that overhaul various parts of the UI all at once, sounds included.

So far, available Pixel themes have been branded promotional collaborations advertising media properties like Wicked and SpongeBob SquarePants. It’s possible that Pixel Audio Services could be laying the groundwork for a more regular theme release cadence — ideally including more customizable, non-branded options. But we don’t know for sure yet.
