I loved my foldable Galaxy Z Fold, but I was so enamored by the idea of a repairable and open-source phone that I was willing to go back to a traditional slab in order to give this experiment a shot. This is not the way I expected my phone to break
The Fairphone (Gen 6) has nearly a dozen components that are user replaceable. I can swap out the battery, the camera lenses, the speakers, the USB port, and even the microphone. I’ve taken some of these parts out and put them back in myself. It’s a satisfying feeling.
Unfortunately, there are many parts of the Fairphone that can’t be easily repaired, despite its perfect iFixit score. If you drop the phone and damage the frame, that’s not something you can swap out. If your volume rocker or power button stop working, you will still need to send the phone in for repairs.
