Roku, Inc. will invest an estimated $25 million in child protection features for its services as part of a deal to end consumer protection litigation brought by the Florida Attorney General.
The company and Attorney General James Uthmeier (R) said in a news release Friday they struck a settlement resolving a case filed last October. In the suit, the Florida AG office claimed that the streaming service violated the Florida Digital Bill of Rights and Florida Deceptive and the Unfair Trade Practices Act by collecting and selling the data of minors who access content through apps on TVs, phones, and tablets.
Under the agreement Roku pledged to give parents greater control over children’s access, and it walks away without any civil penalties or a finding of wrongdoing.
In a statement Uthmeier said the deal will ensure “meaningful safeguards.” Roku issued a statement saying it planned to implement privacy changes “promptly and effectively.”
Naples, Fla.-based Thomas R. Grady represents the state. Stearns Weaver and Wilson Sonsini represent Roku.
The case is Office of the Att’y Gen., State of Florida v. Roku, Inc., Fla. Cir. Ct., No. 11-2025-CA-002351, settlement announced 6/26/26.
