NVIDIA legacy Linux driver gets 580.173.02 update for older GPUs

NVIDIA has released the 580.173.02 Linux graphics driver for older GPUs. This is a legacy branch for Maxwell, Pascal and Volta GPUs, which includes the GeForce GTX 10 Series.

The update focuses on bug fixes rather than new features. NVIDIA addressed a bug that could cause black screens after modesets in X11 applications using the Present extension.

The driver also fixes an OpenGL issue where buffers allocated through glBufferStorage without storage flags could migrate from GPU memory to host memory. Another fix targets delayed wakeups when multiple threads wait on the same Vulkan semaphore, which could lead to stutter and lower performance in some applications.

NVIDIA also fixed a DKMS issue that could prevent kernel module builds from completing after installing the driver with nvidia-installer. This should help users installing the driver manually instead of using distribution packages.

Maxwell, Pascal and Volta included

The 580 driver series is the last Linux branch for GMxxx Maxwell, GPxxx Pascal and GVxxx Volta GPUs. NVIDIA says this branch will continue to receive support for new Linux kernels, X servers and critical bug fixes during the relevant support period.

The Linux x86_64 package for 580.173.02 is available from NVIDIA’s driver archive. Users with newer GeForce GPUs should use NVIDIA’s current production or feature branch drivers instead.
