Purism has launched the Librem 16, a new 16-inch Linux laptop for users wanting privacy-focused hardware, open-source firmware, and physical security controls. The system is ready to ship, but its pricing places it well outside the mainstream laptop market.

The Librem 16 starts at $2,899 for the Base configuration with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage. The Plus model costs $4,199 with 32 GB of RAM and 2 TB of storage, while the Max configuration reaches $9,799 with 64 GB of RAM and 16 TB of storage. A custom build option is also available, starting at $2,870.

As you can see, the Librem 16 is not positioned as a conventional specs-per-dollar laptop. According to the company, its value is built around Purism’s privacy and security stack, including PureOS (Purism’s Debian-based Linux distro), coreboot firmware, disabled Intel Management Engine, hardware kill switches, and optional PureBoot support.

On the hardware side, Purism lists the Librem 16 with an Intel Core i7-13620H processor, a 13th-generation chip with 10 cores and 16 threads. Graphics are handled by integrated Intel UHD Graphics, so there is no dedicated GPU. The laptop uses a 16-inch 1920×1200 display with a 16:10 aspect ratio and supports up to 64 GB of DDR4 memory through two SO-DIMM slots.

Storage uses two M.2 slots supporting both NVMe and SATA drives. Depending on the configuration, Purism offers storage up to 16 TB, which drives the top-end Max model’s high price.

Connectivity includes two USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 ports with Power Delivery and DisplayPort Alt Mode, two USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports, HDMI, a microSD card reader, Gigabit Ethernet, and a 3.5 mm audio jack. Wireless networking uses Intel AX200 Wi-Fi 6, and the battery is 54.2 Wh. The aluminum chassis weighs 1.8 kg.

Privacy features are the main accent. The Librem 16 includes hardware kill switches to physically disable the camera, microphone, wireless, and Bluetooth. Purism also offers…
