Months ahead of the iPhone Ultra’s expected fall release, a new leak claims Apple has already greenlit its replacement while keeping its powder dry on a potential iPhone Air 3.

Apple’s first foldable iPhone now looks increasingly likely to be called iPhone Ultra. But in a post to Weibo, leaker Digital Chat Station says Apple has already confirmed development of the second-gen model.

However, with Apple thought to be working on an iPhone Air 2, the likelihood of a third iteration is unclear. The leaker believes Apple will wait and see how well the second-gen version fares before committing to a third.

The iPhone Ultra is still far from official, but time waits for nobody. The leaker believes that the iPhone Ultra 2 “has already been confirmed,” adding that it will likely use the same displays as the original.

As for the iPhone Ultra, that now looks increasingly likely to be announced in September alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Whether it goes on sale at the same time as those handsets remains to be seen, however.

Things are just as unclear for the iPhone Air 3. While it’s believed the iPhone Air 2 has been greenlit by Apple, including a second camera, the thin and light’s future is uncertain.

The leaker believes that “tooling for the iPhone Air 3 has not yet begun.” Apple is apparently yet to decide if there will be a third generation, with the performance of iPhone Air 2 sales expected to inform that decision.

The iPhone Air 2 is penciled in for a spring 2027 release.

Digital Chat Station has a relatively strong track record in terms of leaking information about unreleased products. However, it’s important to remember that none of this is confirmed by Apple, nor has it yet been corroborated by other leakers or analysts.
