Google is officially stripping away one of the biggest mobile friction points for Apple users trying to jump into a quick video call. For years, if you received a Google Meet link on an iPhone or iPad and didn’t have the dedicated Google Meet or Gmail apps installed, you were essentially locked out of the meeting until you got that taken care of.

That app requirement is now officially a thing of the past. According to a new announcement on the Google Workspace Updates blog, iPhone and iPad users can now join Google Meet sessions directly through Safari, completely eliminating the need to download or install a separate app.

A seamless, web-first gateway for mobile users

This change brings the mobile Safari experience in line with how Meet has functioned on desktop browsers for years. It is a massive quality-of-life win, particularly for external clients, freelancers, or family members who don’t live inside the Google Workspace ecosystem but frequently need to jump onto calls hosted by Google users. The workflow is designed to be completely frictionless:

  • Automatic Routing: If an iOS user clicks on a Google Meet invitation link and the system detects that neither the Gmail nor Meet app is present on the hardware, the operating system will automatically open Safari and launch the call interface right in the web view.
  • No Google Account Required: For individuals without a Google account, entering a meeting is entirely seamless. Guests can simply provide their name to request entry into the call, allowing the meeting host to admit them immediately.
