Great news ahead of the Steam Machine launch, thanks to AMD updating FSR 4 it’s now supported on discrete RDNA3 GPUs for Linux / SteamOS and Steam Machine.
To get it to work you need Proton Experimental for this, which was recently updated to add direct support for it. On any Linux / SteamOS system just search for “Proton Experimental” in your Steam library and install it. Then you can select it for specific games for testing – more on that in the GamingOnLinux guide.
This should hopefully really help boost game performance on the Steam Machine, so it will be interesting when I finally get my hands on one to do some benchmarking and really put it through testing.
The information comes direct from Valve developer Pierre-Loup Griffais on Bluesky:
Thanks to AMD’s recent update, FSR4 for discrete RDNA3 GPUs and Steam Machine is now available for Linux/SteamOS through Proton Experimental!
Fingers crossed I get that email tomorrow about a reservation, as Valve PR did not respond to multiple requests for hardware. Then ordering begins on Monday for the first set. As a reminder from their original announcement:
Based on the reservation order, you will receive an email on June 25th indicating one of two things:
- You’ve been added to the reservation queue and a Steam Machine has been reserved in your name. As units become available for shipment, people in the reservation queue will receive an email with the option to purchase.
- We’ll send the first batch of those starting Monday June 29th, and will continue to go through the reservation queue as units become available.
- You’ve been added to the waitlist and we’ll let you know when more units become available.
