LOS ANGELES: Google has released Android 17, the latest version of its mobile operating system, bringing a range of new features including freely floating app windows, screen recording with a selfie-video overlay and a gaming mode for foldable devices.

The update began rolling out first to Pixel devices that still receive Android updates earlier this month. Users can check under Settings System Software updates System update to see whether the update is already available, or simply wait until their smartphone notifies them.

Owners of other Android smartphones or tablets will need to wait until their manufacturer has adapted Android 17 for their specific devices. Those updates are expected later in the year.

Here is what Android 17 contains in detail:

Multitasking with floating windows

Up to five apps can be displayed as smaller, floating windows – known as Bubbles – freely positioned over the main screen, making it easy to look something up quickly or handle several things at once. The feature is designed to make multitasking easier.

To open a floating window, users simply press and hold the app icon. On devices with a large display, the windows dock in a dedicated bar along the bottom edge of the screen.

Selfie-video overlay on recordings without an extra app

Screen recordings with a selfie-video overlay are now possible directly from the operating system, without the need to install additional apps. The feature – popular for reaction videos on social media networks – can now be accessed natively.

The recording can be started from the quick settings menu by selecting the screen recording function for the full screen, choosing “Show selfie camera” and then starting the recording.

Better privacy for location and contacts
