An M2 Max MacBook Pro owner living in Australia recalls the time when he had to face an ordeal to get this powerful machine replaced because it was under AppleCare+. Fortunately, in less than two months, a brand-spanking-new M5 Max MacBook Pro became his daily driver and, as a gesture of goodwill, Apple threw in store credit of $140 to purchase whatever he liked from the nearest retail outlet.

Since the M2 Max MacBook Pro stopped working in May, due to an “unexplained cause,” Reddit user VicZ_Noodles states that he didn’t need to pay any kind of service fee. He did, unfortunately, have to wait a considerably long period to receive an update from Apple, and after being unable to hear back for two weeks, he was forced to escalate the matter. It turns out that the team couldn’t find a replacement part for the M2 Max MacBook Pro, so the only other alternative was to offer an M5 Max upgrade of equivalent value.

“I called Apple multiple times with no definitive answer for the hold up, I eventually said that this is unacceptable and told them to escalate this. I eventually got a call from the backend team, and found out that they were waiting on a part with a ETA of 2 weeks, so they suggested that I get an upgrade instead.”

Pretty soon, the Redditor went to Apple’s website and configured an M5 Max with an 18-core CPU and a 32-core GPU, though the rest of the specifications weren’t mentioned in the post, with the image above also shrouding the important details. The whole episode concluded in seven weeks, with Apple offering store credit due to the time it took to reach a resolution. With the $140 amount, the new M5 Max MacBook Pro owner purchased a cable and a 4-pack of AirTags.
