A newly introduced tracking tool will log app and browser usage for some risk investigators. Privacy safeguards are promised, but staff concerns are growing.

Toronto, June 19 – Toronto-Dominion Bank told some employees who work in the Financial Crimes and Risk Management division that they would roll out software to monitor their work. The information was confirmed by a recording of a team meeting that was reviewed and by a document the bank sent to employees.

According to the record, the program will track the time employees spend on browsers and internal chats and meeting apps.

Companies are increasingly facing employee resistance to the introduction of monitoring their work.

In a statement, the bank said the rollout is “standard industry practice.” “In different parts of our business we use automated solutions to improve insights and allocate resources more efficiently,” the statement read. “This is not artificial intelligence and does not pertain to a specific case; the tool allows managers to more accurately manage workflows, team capacity, and productivity. Where used, colleagues are informed about its location and its purpose.”

TD said it has taken steps to protect colleagues’ privacy.

ActiveOps, the company that supplies the software, describes WorkiQ as a tool for “employee intelligence and wellbeing” on its website. ActiveOps did not respond to a request for comment.
