Apple’s next software update expected this fall will leave Intel-powered MacBook Pros and iMacs behind.
At WWDC 2026, the tech giant announced macOS 27 Golden Gate along with new features and improvements. But what went unannounced were the devices that will be able to run the new operating system.
Instead, Techradar found that confirmation tucked away at the bottom of the macOS news site. The publication said the move is not that surprising, and that it was only a matter of time before the technology company dropped support for older Macs.
Apple launched its own Arm-based silicon chip in 2020 beginning with the M1.
These are the devices that will not see the latest macOS update:
- 16-inch MacBook Pro (2019)
- 13-inch MacBook Pro (2020)
- 27-inch iMac (2020)
- Mac Pro (2019)
Products that will receive the latest update are:
- MacBook Air M1 or later
- MacBook Pro M1 or later
- MacBook Pro 13-inch M1 2020 or later
- MacBook Pro 14-inch M1 Pro 2021 or later
- MacBook Pro 16-inch M1 Pro 2021 or later
- MacBook Neo
- iMac M1 2020 or later
- Mac mini M1 2020 or later
- Mac Studio 2022 and later
Those using Intel Macs will be able to run macOS 26, but they risk not getting security updates in the future.
