Apple announced a major update to its Siri digital assistant on Monday, according to a report from CNN. The revamped assistant, referred to as Siri AI, is expected to enter beta testing later this year. Apple stated that the new Siri will be capable of operating apps, analyzing an iPhone’s screen to answer questions, and incorporating personal context into its responses.
The company has faced pressure over the past couple of years to demonstrate a strategy for catching up in the artificial intelligence space. Barclays analysts commented in a research note after Apple’s event that the updates felt more evolutionary than revolutionary. Apple is not the only major technology company facing doubts about its AI capabilities. OpenAI and Anthropic, both approaching public offerings, have encountered skepticism about whether they generate enough revenue to justify their high valuations and investments.
Apple has been somewhat insulated from such concerns because most of its revenue comes from iPhone sales, which have been strong. The company reported record revenue for the March quarter, largely driven by demand for the iPhone 17.
