Global Teen Wellbeing Policy Manager at Discord says The Family Center helps parents to be in the know and start a curious, not critical conversation.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — It’s not uncommon to see an entire family in a living room, all of them on a different screen. Chances are, you don’t know all the people your kid or your teenager is talking to or which sites they’re visiting. But you probably would like to, wouldn’t you?

“We do understand that teens need their own spaces, right? And they have their own spaces in the real world as well that parents don’t necessarily know about. So we’re not giving like the content of the conversation, we’re telling parents this is who they’re having the conversation with. So we’re giving them enough insights again to have that. Conversation, but again, not violating the teens’ privacy because we know how important that is to teens and also to their trust,” said Kristelle Lavallee, Global Teen Wellbeing Policy Manager at Discord.

Discord, the gaming and communication platform, has what’s called a Family Center. The idea, give parents ways to keep tabs on what their kids are doing online, who they’re talking to, for how long, and what sites they’re searching. The idea…is to spark conversation between parent and teen.

“So that parents aren’t coming from a place of, I don’t know what you’re doing online. Tell me more. It’s more of, hey, I saw that you’re doing this. Tell me how that’s going. I saw you were talking to so and so. How are they doing? That’s what it’s really meant to bridge and remind them that they are parent in this situation,” said Lavallee.
