SPOKANE, Wash. — May is Osteoporosis Awareness Month, and Spokane is leading the way with an all-new diagnostic tool.

The Echolight REMS is a tool that measures bone density and health with ultrasound technology.

OsteoStrong on Spokane’s South Hill is the first center in Washington state to have the new technology. They say catching osteoporosis early can make all the difference.

“Osteoporosis is kind of labeled the silent disease,” Jenny Green, manager at OsteoStrong, said. “Most people don’t know that they have it until a fracture or break has occurred, or they’ve been tested for it.”

OsteoStrong said most doctors don’t start screening for osteoporosis until patients are 65 years old, even though bones can start declining at 30 years old.

But small lifestyle changes like exercise, quality nutrition and supplements can make a difference.

“Our ultimate win is changing the health of our bones, but that journey and that quality of life is just as important… the confidence of taking the stairs without hesitation,” Green said.
