The race to regulate artificial intelligence is on.

Not only are state lawmakers racing against the tech giants that have created AI but they are also racing against some of their own congressional colleagues who are pushing a bipartisan bill at the federal level that would supersede any effort by the states to regulate AI.

Last year, New York passed the RAISE ACT — legislation to create guardrails around artificial intelligence. But, as reported by Politico, some members of Congress are considering legislation that would override state laws like the RAISE ACT.

This has prompted two New York state lawmakers to send a letter to all New York House Democrats urging them to “oppose federal efforts to preempt state regulations that protect residents from the harms of artificial intelligence.”

One of those state lawmakers is state Sen. Andrew Gounardes, who sponsored the RAISE Act and joined Capital Tonight’s Susan Arbetter to discuss the risks in play.
