A multimillion gift from help South Dakota’s land grant university engrain itself as a leader in the world’s most advanced farming technologies.

And South Dakota State University is doing with a new endowed faculty position focused on applying automation and data systems to livestock operations.

The Brookings-based university announced that a $2 million land gift from retired professor Richard “Dick” Nicolai and his wife, Jeune, will fund the Richard and Jeune Nicolai Endowed Professor in Precision Livestock Systems — a position university leaders say will help close a growing gap between crop and livestock technology education.
