Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly common in everyday life, and schools are now navigating how to responsibly bring the technology into classrooms.

Portland Public Schools rolled out a new guidebook aimed at helping students, teachers and families understand expectations around using AI in education.

District leaders said the goal is to promote ethical responsibility and safe use of the technology across schools—while making clear AI is not intended to replace teachers.

School leaders noted the guidebook approach was chosen because artificial intelligence is evolving rapidly, requiring policies that can change just as quickly.

But some families say the rollout happened too fast. Parents who participated in district outreach efforts said they wanted more community involvement before AI guidance was introduced. Some expressed concerns that the district framed AI as an inevitable classroom tool before fully addressing potential downsides.

Those concerns include fears about loss of critical thinking skills, plagiarism and academic integrity, misinformation and students becoming dependent on AI tools for schoolwork. Some parents also worry that AI could remove important challenges from the learning process.

They argue moments like writer’s block, struggling through assignments and learning how to problem-solve independently are essential parts of education that students should not bypass.

District survey results highlighted similar concerns.
