Renowned artificial intelligence researcher Andrej Karpathy, a founding member of OpenAI and former AI director at Tesla, has joined Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI models, marking a major talent win in the intensifying competition among leading AI firms.

Karpathy announced the move in a post on X, saying he was excited to return to research and development at a time when large language models (LLMs) are evolving rapidly.

“Personal update: I’ve joined Anthropic. I think the next few years at the frontier of LLMs will be especially formative,” Karpathy wrote.

At Anthropic, Karpathy will join the company’s pretraining team, which is responsible for large-scale training runs that shape the knowledge and capabilities of Claude, Anthropic’s flagship AI system. The team is led by Nick Joseph, Anthropic’s head of pretraining.

Karpathy is considered one of the most influential figures in AI due to his work across research, education and industry. He was among OpenAI’s earliest members and later led Tesla’s AI and Autopilot vision efforts before leaving the electric vehicle maker in 2022.

After departing Tesla, Karpathy became widely known for technical explainers and educational content on AI. In 2024, he launched Eureka Labs, an AI-focused education platform aimed at combining human learning with artificial intelligence tools.

His move to Anthropic comes amid fierce competition between major AI companies including OpenAI, Anthropic and Google-backed labs, where attracting top researchers has become as important as securing funding and computing power.

Anthropic has increasingly emerged as a major rival to OpenAI, particularly through its Claude family of AI…
