Lincoln County moves to strengthen cybersecurity

Someone was able to hack into the county government’s email system, Lincoln County Administrator Daniel Calcote told the Board of Supervisors Monday.

“They didn’t get anything, but they messed with emails,” he said. “It’s been taken care of, but we want to improve safeguards going forward to protect employees and taxpayers.”

Applied Technology Group principal Shane Adams presented the board with a proposal for added security and monitoring of systems.

“I’ve been working with Rhyan (Tranum, IT Systems Administrator) in Lincoln County for years, providing cybersecurity as needed,” Adams said.

ATG works closely with the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security in addressing critical infrastructure, Adams said.

“Iran is a big concern right now, with [coordinated] attacks,” he said. “It has been stopped in Lincoln County, but that doesn’t mean it will not happen again.”

Calcote said he had reviewed the proposal — a one-time cost of $12,000, plus $48,000 annually for the service.

“It’s within the budget, and will reduce some other things, so I recommend we go ahead,” the county administrator said.

The Board approved the upgraded software agreement unanimously.

In other business, the Board:

• Approved the pauper burial of Maxine Cleckler, resident of Haven Hall; no family members were located (approved at May 12 docket meeting).

• Approved the removal of…
