Chinese EV maker Nio Inc. is positioning its Firefly brand as more than just an entry-level vehicle line — with the group’s founder and CEO William Li comparing the brand’s cultural appeal to Apple’s iPhone.

The remarks were made during a virtual interview conducted over the weekend as part of the 18th Xuanyuan Automotive Blue Book Forum in Guangzhou.

Li said Firefly was designed around the idea of “glowing with its own light,” targeting a broad demographic that cuts across both age groups and income levels.

“A young graduate can afford it, but a wealthy executive can also drive it to take their children to school,” Li said, according to local media reports.

The comments highlight Nio‘s strategy as competition intensifies in China’s EV market, where automakers are increasingly attempting to differentiate through branding and lifestyle positioning rather than car features and specs alone.

Firefly as a Fashion-Oriented Brand

Firefly appears positioned as the company’s attempt to capture style-conscious urban buyers seeking premium small EVs without entering the luxury price bracket traditionally associated with the Nio brand.

Li noted that Firefly has evolved beyond being simply a transportation product, describing it as a lifestyle and fashion-oriented brand with its own emerging culture — a comparison he likened to the evolution of the iPhone.

Last month, Nio‘s Senior VP of Design Kris Tomasson travelled to Milan to unveil a one-off Firefly customisation concept at Milan Design Week.

The installation marked the Chinese EV maker’s debut at one of the world’s most prominent design events.
