KDE announced that the Sovereign Tech Fund is investing more than €1 million into KDE software development. The funding will be used to strengthen the structural reliability and security of KDE’s core infrastructure, including Plasma, KDE Linux, and the frameworks underlying its communication services.
The investment is aimed at advancing KDE’s mission of supporting digital sovereignty through free and open-source software. KDE said its software ecosystem includes operating systems, desktop environments, document viewers, image and video editors, software development libraries, and other essential applications used across personal, corporate, and public infrastructure.
KDE emphasized that its software is publicly auditable, freely available, and adaptable for organizations that want greater control over their technology stack. The organization also highlighted that, as a non-profit, it does not rely on subscriptions, advertising, or monetizing user data.
According to KDE, the funding from the Sovereign Tech Fund will help improve the security, testing infrastructure, and communication frameworks behind its software products, with the broader goal of enhancing privacy, reliability, and digital independence for users and institutions.
The announcement also criticized what KDE described as widespread privacy and data management issues among major technology companies, arguing that digital sovereignty has become increasingly important for governments, businesses, and individuals.
Fiona Krakenbürger said the investment reflects the importance of desktop technologies as foundational digital infrastructure. Krakenbürger noted that desktop environments are central to how people access services related to healthcare, education, and work, and described KDE as one of the two major desktop environments used across Linux systems.
