Apple Showcases MAMI Shorts Shot on iPhone 17 Pro Max in India

Apple has unveiled the latest edition of MAMI Select: Filmed on iPhone, a collaboration with the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image that spotlights emerging Indian filmmakers creating short films using the iPhone 17 Pro Max and other Apple devices. The initiative features four regionally diverse stories from across India and highlights how smartphone filmmaking is reshaping modern storytelling and film production techniques.

Apple and the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image have expanded the MAMI Select: Filmed on iPhone programme with four new short films created using the iPhone 17 Pro Max and Apple’s wider ecosystem of devices. The initiative is guided by acclaimed mentors including Sriram Raghavan, Chaitanya Tamhane, Dibakar Banerjee, and Geetu Mohandas, all of whom have earned recognition at platforms such as the Venice International Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, National Film Awards, and Asian Film Awards. Raghavan described filmmaking as being driven by creative “vision” rather than scale, while Tamhane said mobile filmmaking opens new possibilities in movement, accessibility, and cinematic expression.

MAMI director Shivendra Singh Dungarpur said previous editions of the programme attracted millions of online views and earned festival recognition, helping encourage emerging creators to experiment with smartphone-based filmmaking. One of this year’s featured filmmakers, Shreela Agarwal, returns to cinema after a career-ending boxing injury with her short film 11.11, set against Mumbai’s nightlife during a first date. Shot entirely in low-light environments, the project uses the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s ProRes RAW capture to preserve shadow details and improve dynamic range without relying on large lighting setups.
