Contrary to popular belief, Linux is far from niche. It’s widely used in VFX and film production, simulation, engineering, science, architecture, and manufacturing, where open and controlled systems are essential. If you’ve ever tried switching to Linux as an artist, you know how hard it is to keep using the tools you’re familiar with and how many detours it takes to make them work. Recently, Abstract has launched native Linux versions of both InstaMAT, its 3D texturing and material creation tool, and InstaLOD, its well-known suite for geometry optimization.

You might remember InstaMAT generating a lot of buzz in the community when it was released, as it was seen as an alternative to Substance 3D software, offering familiar layer-based painting and node-based workflows. It integrates directly with major DCC tools and game engines and has also just been updated to its 2026 version.

Linux builds for InstaMAT and InstaLOD are available now, with supported distributions including RHEL 8 and 9, Rocky Linux 8 and 9, AlmaLinux 8 and 9, Oracle Linux 8 and 9, and CentOS Stream 8 and 9. These Linux releases are also said to offer “broad feature parity” with the Windows and macOS versions.
