There’s been plenty of chatter about how Apple is “way behind” on AI. One solution the company may be considering is to leave the model-building to other companies and simply let Apple users pick which one they want running their iPhone.

According to a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the upcoming launch of iOS 27 (and iPadOS 27 and macOS 27) will include the option for users to designate which model will power their device’s AI software features, such as image manipulation, text generation — and even Siri’s chats, which may use different voices depending on the model that’s powering the conversation.

We already knew Apple was working with Google to use Gemini to power its upcoming Siri revamp. According to Gurman’s sources, Apple has also been working with Anthropic on the new integrations. And, of course, iPhone users already know that Siri currently uses OpenAI’s ChatGPT to answer questions that reach beyond the assistant’s current capabilities. It’s not clear whether other AI companies have been invited to the party, but we’ll know for sure once iOS 27 makes its debut — likely this September.

This integration with third-party AI models will reportedly happen through “Extensions” and be enabled within the Settings app. These extensions will allow Apple Intelligence to draw on generative AI functions from the selected models to power things like Siri and Image Playground.

Perhaps being behind in the AI race won’t be all that bad for Apple after all. And, on a personal note, if it helps make Siri a better assistant, maybe I can switch back to iPhone.
