Watch this determined tufted titmouse work its magic! It’s focused on that cotton fiber tucked inside. You’ll see it pull… stretch… tug… and stretch again — all to free the perfect piece of nesting material. Did you know that Tufted Titmice aren’t able to excavate their own nest cavities? They use natural holes and old nest holes made by woodpeckers. They will also nest in a nest box. They build cup-shaped nests inside the nest cavity using damp leaves, moss and grasses, and bark strips. They line this cup with soft materials such as hair, fur, wool, and cotton, sometimes plucking hairs directly from living mammals. It’s amazing how much effort these little birds put into building a soft, secure nest. Every fiber matters when you’re creating a cozy spot for future nestlings! Don’t put out dryer lint as it falls apart when wet and can contain detergent residue, fragrance and microfibers that are not safe for birds. If you want to support you birds with healthy nest building, stick with natural cotton fiber, small twigs, pine needles, or dead grass (no pesticides).
